Dependents

If you are a spouse and/or minor child of a student in Canada, you qualify as a dependent. Children over the age of 21 are not eligible as dependents.

What is an acceptance letter and how do I procure one?

An acceptance letter is sent to you by the university/college you have been accepted at. You need this to apply for the student visa. It certifies:

  • You are a bona fide student.
  • You meet the institute’s admission requirements.
  • You are enrolled for a full-time course of study.
  • Course fee including any scholarships being offered to you.
What is the difference between a college and a university?

A college offers Certificate and Diploma programs whilst a university offers Degree programs.

Are scholarships available to international students from India?

Canada immigration law requires that all international students are enrolled for a full-time course of study.

How long are TOEFL / IELTS score valid for?

Two years.

Can I take an educational loan for my education?

Requirements for a loan vary from bank to bank subject to their own terms and conditions, your credit scores, collateral etc. You would need to enquire at your bank branch for further information.

Can I work part time during my studies?

I have a valid Canadian Tourist / Business visa. Can I convert it to a Student visa?

An Indian passport holder must apply for a Student visa from India or their current country of residence if they wish to study in Canada.

How soon can I apply for a student visa?

3 months prior to start date of course as mentioned on your acceptance letter.

Post issuance of visa, when can I travel to the Canada?

You can travel one month before start of course.

What accommodation options are available for students from India?

A student from India can opt for on-campus residence facility or look for an off-campus accommodation. For university offered accommodation, international students need to apply for it separately and well ahead of time to ensure availability.

You can also opt for an off-campus accommodation where you can share apartments with other students or put up in a homestay.

What are the requirements for Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)?

Eligibility criteria:

  • Have completed an academic, vocational or professional training program at an eligible institution in Canadathat is at least 8 months in duration leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.
  • A full time student status in Canada.
  • Have received a transcript and an official letter from the college / university confirming that they have met the requirements to complete their program of study.
  • Have a valid study visa at the time of application.
  • Intend to seek training / employment in a position directly related to the completed field of study.
